Back when overlapping Genoas were still making up 70% of the sailplan, and boats were raced with full crews, racing would be a case of running through your headsail wardrobe J1 to J5, stopping at every step along the way.
When one sail got worn out, you’d replace it.
Times have changed. A slimmed down headsail wardrobe, supplemented with reaching sails means better coverage across wind ranges and angles, and less sails to buy and carry. We want to help you make informed decisions to build a wardrobe strategy. That might mean a ‘light’ and a ‘heavy’, with a reef in the heavy, and a storm jib, saving you 2 headsails and thousands of dollars (and quite a bit of weight).
It could take thinking beyond the traditional 3 reefs offshore, and moving the 2nd reef up to a Special Regs percentage, and running the 1st reef at 1.5.
Finally, it might mean full length battens to extend the performance lifespan of your laminate sail, and an overhead leech line, so it’s never too hard to get tension on a humming leach.
Whatever the strategy, we want to support a shift from many-sails that burn out quickly, to strategic wardrobes that give you a longer performance lifespan. Your crew will thank you for less sail changes at 3am, and you’ll have more money for customs house.

Now the value of a boat is tied to the value of it’s existing wardrobe, and we don’t think that’s right. It’s certainly not going to allow these yachts to be campaigned by the next generation of owners.
Kraken offers a different path. We publish real prices on known sail shapes, materials and designs, so you know what to expect.
Every price is a starting point, and from there we tailor the details to your rig measurements, hardware and goals.

1. Confirm your Order
Once you confirm your sail package we'll be in touch, ask you some simple questions just to make sure everything is correct. Then we'll send you an online form to capture your boat's rig measurments. Already have a 3D rig model with Kraken, even easier - we keep all your boat information on file.
2. We Build To Your Timeline
We'll confirm any deadlines and get your sails into production. Radial & Cross Cut sails take approximately 6-8 weeks from order. Membrane sails take 10-12 weeks to allow time to cure. Rush options might be available, you can always ask.
3. Sails Delivered to your Dock or Home
You choose the destination, sails can ship to your home, boat or a destination if you're cruising or campaigning. All sails arrive set up and ready to race. We're with you beyond the drop off too. Need advice on tuning? There are simple ways we can support you with photos underway to review. And of course, we offer servicing and support long term.

Common questions
Are these one-size-fits-all sails?
Absolutely not. Standard classes allow us to get a starting point for sail area and application type, but from there, as with every Kraken sail we build a sail truely built for your boat. After all, masts get replaced, jib cars move, and tack attachments get updated.
Can you help me choose the sails I need?
Absolutely, but more than that, we work with you to build a long term wardrobe plan that will allow you to make strategic buying decisions that suits your campaign goals and aspirations.
Is Kraken just for offshore racing?
Nope, we design for everything from twilight racing to bluewater epics – the important thing to us is to make great sails that get people out on the water.
Do I need to order online or can we talk first?
We would love to speak to you first. For some customers, selecting options and hitting ‘buy’ is the way to go, but not for all. If you’d like to discuss anything at all, get in touch.
