Our Strategy and Ethics
Where is Kraken Sails based?
Kraken Sails is proudly based in Australia and fully Australian Owned. As an Australian-founded Sail Making company we don’t pay any brand licensing fees to international brands.
Like every modern sailmaker, we operate in a global economy—materials are sourced worldwide, and advanced manufacturing techniques are used across the industry. But where it truly counts, we’re Australian.
Our founding customers are Australian. We race in Australian waters. And we believe that if Australian sailors trust us with their sails, then we should be contributing back—to Australian roads, hospitals, and schools.
Our home clubs are Royal Geelong Yacht Club, Royal Yacht Club of Victoria and the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria, and we’re proud to be supporting them with our personal time as committee members, as well as with financial sponsorship of their local events.
For us, it’s a matter of integrity. We hope that integrity shines through in everything we do.
But Ryan and Christie, the founders, aren’t sailmakers themselves?
That’s right—Ryan and Christie aren’t sailmakers, and they’ll be the first to tell you that. But what they bring to Kraken Sails is something just as important: the ability to see the forest for the trees.
With years of experience in business and operations, they have the insight to create efficient processes, hire top talent, and maintain a focus on quality and innovation. Their strength is in understanding the bigger picture—bringing in the right team, streamlining production, and ensuring that everything works together seamlessly.
But beyond their business expertise, Ryan and Christie are passionate adventurers and sailors themselves. They’ve been on the customer side of things, racing in some of the world’s toughest conditions and truly understand what sailors need. That perspective has shaped Kraken Sails from the ground up, ensuring that we’re not just making sails—we’re crafting solutions for real-world sailors.
So while Christie and Ryan may not stitch sails, their leadership, experience, and genuine passion for sailing ensures that Kraken Sails is a company driven by purpose, backed by excellence, and built for the adventurer in all of us.
Are you putting Australian sailmakers out of business by using offshore factories?
No—and here’s why.
The reality is that nearly every sailmaker, even the biggest Australian lofts, relies on offshore production in some form. The difference is that we’re upfront about it. Modern sail manufacturing requires specialized equipment, controlled environments, and high-tech processes that simply don’t exist at scale in Australia.
What truly defines an Australian sailmaker isn’t where the fabric is stitched—it’s where the expertise, design, and service come from (and which country we’re paying tax in). At Kraken Sails, our sails are designed by Australian professionals, for Australian sailors, and tested in Australian conditions. We keep high-skill jobs like sail design, performance tuning, and customer support right here, ensuring that Australian expertise drives every sail we build.
If anything, we’re making high-performance sails more accessible to Australian sailors, keeping local racing fleets strong and competitive. That’s the future of Australian sailmaking—and we’re proud to be part of it.
Why don't we have 'ready to buy' sails off the shelf?
It might seem convenient to buy a sail that’s “ready to go” at a low price, but a sail that simply fits isn’t the same as a sail that works.
We once raced offshore on a yacht with a mainsail that, on paper, had the right luff, leech, and foot lengths. It could hoist to full height and had outhaul range, so technically, it “fit.” But that’s where the fit ended. It was a cross-cut Dacron sail with a soft leech that fluttered uncontrollably in anything over 15 knots, shaking the entire rig. Its draft was too deep and too far aft, making it nearly impossible to depower—even when reefed. What should have been a basic delivery sail had been sold as a racing sail for offshore conditions, and it simply wasn’t up to the job.
Sail shape, structure, and fabric selection are just as important as dimensions. A triangle with the right three sides doesn’t make a sail that can get you upwind. A poorly designed sail isn’t just slow—it can be a liability. That’s why Kraken Sails takes a design-first approach.
We may offer off-the-shelf options for certain one-design classes in the future, but for now, we’re focused on building sails that are right, not just sails that fit.
Do you employ Australian designers?
Yes—Kraken Sails employs Australian designers because great sail design isn’t just about speed; it’s about sustainability and safety.
A well-designed sail lasts longer, performs better, and ultimately creates less waste. If a sail is built to the right specifications, it won’t just be more enjoyable to sail—it will also stay out of landfill for longer.
Precision matters offshore. A properly cut sail won’t hum in high winds, is far less likely to tear or shred, and—most importantly—won’t put your rig at risk.
That’s why we invest in local expertise. Because good design isn’t just a luxury—it’s essential.
If you use the same materials, why are you so much cheaper than the name-brand lofts?
Big-name sail lofts don’t have a monopoly on quality materials—we use the same high-performance fabrics, films, and fibers as the best in the business. The difference? We don’t carry the overhead of a massive global brand.
At Kraken Sails, we run a lean, design-focused operation. We don’t inflate prices to cover sponsoring super-maxis, franchise fees, or layers of middlemen. Instead, we invest in smart design, direct customer relationships, and efficient production.
The result? World-class sails without the premium price tag. Same materials, better value.
Why are your sails more expensive than online-direct lofts?
Simply because they’re a different product. We’ve stripped out a lot of the overhead that allows us to compete at around 35% less than the monopoly lofts, but we can’t strip out the elements that allow us to make a standout product, consistently. We pay our Australian designers running licensed, top end modelling software, instead of a factory based ‘designer’ that has potentially never experienced the joy of trying to eat 2 minute noodles downstairs while being rounded up offshore (or built sails for an America’s Cup team). Our business-process balance allows us to offer a fantastic product at a great price.
Materials
Which sailcloth brands does Kraken Sails use?
We use premium materials from the world’s leading sailcloth manufacturers: Dimension-Polyant, Contender Sailcloth, and Challenge Sailcloth. These companies supply the highest quality fabrics to top-tier racing and cruising yachts worldwide.
Are Kraken Sails made with first-quality sailcloth?
Yes. Kraken Sails sources all sailcloth directly from manufacturers or authorised distributors, ensuring that every roll meets stringent quality standards. We do not use second-quality, off-cut, or factory-reject materials—our sails are built from the same first-grade materials that elite racing programs and offshore cruisers rely on.
Do other lofts have access to materials Kraken Sails doesn’t?
No. Dimension-Polyant, Contender, and Challenge Sailcloth supply materials to sailmakers worldwide. All sails currently use the same fibres, such as polyester, carbon, dyneema, and the same facing fabrics such as taffeta, life skin or films. There are no “exclusive” materials that Kraken Sails cannot access—our approach is to select the right cloth for each sail, based on performance, longevity, and value. What you might be hearing instead is brand names, or “special combinations” that are the normal combinations changed just enough to be a rebranding exercise. We use real names to help promote transparency and make sure our customers are fully informed.
How does Kraken Sails choose sailcloth for each project?
Our team selects fabric based on several factors:
- Performance needs – Whether racing or cruising, we match materials to the expected loads and conditions.
- Durability – We prioritize longevity without sacrificing performance.
- Sail shape retention – Membrane sails and laminates are chosen for their ability to hold their designed shape over time.
- Budget & value – We ensure customers get the best performance within their price range.
We don’t limit ourselves to a single brand—we pick the right material for the job.
What membrane sails does Kraken Sails offer?
Kraken Sails offers a range of high-performance membrane sails, including 2D and 3D membrane constructions with multiple reinforcement layers. These membranes are engineered for strength, weight efficiency, and precision shape retention, providing an edge in both racing and long-distance cruising.
How do I compare a proprietary fabric with what Kraken has quoted?
Some sailmakers promote “proprietary” fabrics, but in most cases, these are private-label versions of existing materials. If you’re comparing a quote with a proprietary fabric name, ask:
- Who manufactures it? Many proprietary fabrics are rebranded versions of industry-standard materials.
- What is the fiber composition? Is it a known blend of Aramid, Carbon, Technora, or UHMWPE (e.g., Dyneema/Spectra)?
- Is there independent testing? Proven fabrics from Dimension-Polyant, Contender, and Challenge have published data on stretch, UV resistance, and durability.
- What is the weight and layer structure? A key factor in performance and longevity.
Kraken Sails provides full transparency on the materials we use, ensuring you know exactly what you’re getting—no vague marketing names, just high-performance sailcloth tested at the highest levels.
Do Kraken Sails use "budget" or "factory second" materials?
No. Every sail we build uses first-run, premium-quality sailcloth from reputable global suppliers. We do not compromise on material quality, and our partnerships with Dimension-Polyant, Contender, and Challenge ensure that every sail is built to the highest standards.
Why do Kraken Sails' materials matter?
The right fabric is just the starting point—design, engineering, and construction determine how well a sail performs over time. Kraken Sails combines world-class materials with cutting-edge design and precision construction to deliver sails that outperform expectations.
Can I get membrane sails from Kraken?
Kraken Sails offers a range of high-performance membrane sails, including 2D and 3D membrane constructions with multiple reinforcement layers. These membranes are engineered for strength, weight efficiency, and precision shape retention, providing an edge in both racing and long-distance cruising.
Manufacturing & Ordering
What happens if there's a manufacturing error?
We understand this is your biggest concern. While we have extensive QA processes in place, if we’ve made a design error, we’ll build you a new sail on a rush order—about 8 weeks for membrane sails and 4 weeks for stitched sails. We’ll start on the replacement before you return the incorrect sail, so you won’t be left waiting. We never attempt to “fix” a new sail to make it right—you ordered a perfect sail, and that’s what you’ll get.
What if there's a Mistake in my measurements?
Our process includes checks to catch common errors, such as checking angles generated by your numbers. For instance, if your max luff length creates an unusual boom angle, we’ll reach out for clarification. But if the sail doesn’t fit because of a measurement mistake on your end, we’ll work with you to find a cost-effective solution, possibly offering you wholesale pricing to correct the issue.
I've never designed a sail before - can you help?
Absolutely! Designing a sail can be a complex process, but we’re here to guide you every step of the way. After all, you’re not ‘designing’ a sail, you’re letting us know what’s important to you, and then we’re designing a sail that works.
We believe in sharing knowledge, and we’ll explain each step so you can feel confident you’re making the right choices for your boat and your sailing needs.
How do I order a sail from Kraken
Ordering is simple! Contact us through the website to get a quote, and once you’re ready, we’ll guide you through the measurement process using our measurement tool. After submitting your measurements, our team will design, build, and deliver your custom sail.
Can I track my sail order?
Yes, you’ll receive regular updates from us throughout the design, production, and delivery process. We’ll also provide tracking information through the customer account area once your sail is shipped, so you’ll always know where your sail is and when to expect it.
How Long Will It Take to Receive My Sail?
Once you’ve accepted a quote, we’ll provide a detailed timeline. As a rough guide:
- Radial and crosscut sails take around 2 weeks to design, 4 weeks to build, and 2 weeks for QA and delivery. Expect your sail within 8 weeks of measurement.
- Membrane sails take around 2 weeks to design, 8 weeks to build, and 2 weeks for QA and delivery. Due to a critical 6-week curing process, membrane sails take about 3 months from measurement.
If you have a race deadline or specific time constraints, contact us, and we’ll do our best to expedite production. We’re highly process driven, and we stand behind our timelines.
Shipping, Warranty & Guarantee
What does the Kraken Sails Warranty Cover?
Our 2-year limited warranty covers seam failures, delamination, and hardware issues. It excludes damage due to misuse (e.g., using a bay racing sail for offshore cruising), sustained UV exposure, and general wear and tear.
In addition, because we’re a fully owned and operated Australian company, you’ve covered by Australian consumer law.
What Happens if my sail fails within the first 90 days?
We can’t imagine that it would, but we know strong businesses are built on great customer service and sound business planning. If your sail fails within the first 90 days due to a structural or hardware issue, we’ll replace it immediately on our fastest factory timeline—no waiting for lengthy repairs. We take pride in getting you back on the water as soon as possible.
How do I make a warranty claim?
Start by emailing [email protected] with photos and a description of the issue. From there, we’ll guide you through the process, including arranging global shipping for inspection or repair. If a replacement is needed, it will be processed on a rush timeline. More information can be found on the warranty page, or in your purchase documents.
Do you ship sails worldwide?
Yes, we provide global shipping for all new sails, repairs, and warranty claims. Whether you’re in Europe, North America, Asia, or anywhere else, we’ll get your sail to your boat. That means you can take your sails around the world with you, and if you have a major, we can get a new one direct to your dock.
If you’re in a truely remote location we might require you to work with us a little, but we’ll do our absolute best to help work through any problems.
How do you handle sail delivery and pickup for repairs?
We offer shipping services to and from your location, including for warranty and repair claims. We’ll coordinate all logistics, ensuring hassle-free service no matter where you are.
