How do we measure up?

Great Data In, Great Sails Out

Kraken never designs a new sail from the measurments of an old one.

How do you get great design

You can up-end an industry and challenge the status quo, but there needs to be reason for it. Kraken is shaking up franchised sail-lofts because we believe the outcome is a better sail wardrobe at a more sustainable price.

The correct starting point

Never from an old sail. Never from a handicap. You cannot design a sail that performs from either. Nor does a database of past boats have any bearing on the next. So we empower you take the right measurements.

Error Free Transmission

By creating an online tool, we can pass measurement datapoints to the design team without worrying about transcription errors. And with submitted photos, we can sanity check your questions too.

Giving Designers Time

By separating design and customer service, we free our designers from the busy work that can often hold up other lofts in getting back to you or getting your sail design done in the right timeframe, with the right level of care.

Dynamic Fit

A sail isn't a 3 sided triangle, and it's not designed for static use. Understanding the sailing style and agenda of the boat (and it's standing rig) informs design choices and materials.

Fit for Purpose

There are almost an infinite combinations of design, fabric, fittings and finish we could use to create your sail. We work with you to ensure that the sail you've ordered will do the job.

Integrity

Through the systemisation we've moved into consistent pricing, defined delivery timelines and reliable customer service. Without process you can't have consistently great process.

One of the biggest bottlenecks in sail design is getting the local loft down to measure your boat.

If it’s not done properly, or they measure your new sails from your old, (or your handicap) it is simply not possible to craft a sail that will perform.

And yet, if you know how, it’s surprisingly simple to do it yourself

Why we built a mobile-based measuring tool

Less Waiting

We know it can take forever to get the sail maker down to the boat for a measure, and often that results in emailing a handicap, or measuring an old sail that's off the boat. We wanted to create a bulletproof way for you to measure your boat properly, as soon as you're ready.

Less Errors

By using an online tool, there are no handwriting errors, no transcription errors, no misreading. Your numbers go directly to the modelling tools without silly mistakes. We're able to effortlessly crosscheck measurements, and you can log in and check them too.

More Space for Detail

Instead of filling in a pdf, you can upload as many photos, questions and details you like as you move over your boat. Unsure if you want to stick with slugs, or move to friction rings on the reefs? You can take a photo and add a comment, so it's never over looked in the design phase.

Understanding the measurement

Each part of the form has considered instructions, including how to measure, (e.g. which side of the boom to measure against), and prompts to help you understand why we're taking the measurement.

A Picture Tells 1000 Words

Unlike a printed paperbased form, you can upload photos in real-time within the tool to make sure we really understand what you're talking about. Mast rake with plumblines? No, we take your series of images to create a digitised 2D luff curve for the range of your backstay and rake.

Asking the Bigger questions

In the end, a sail isn't just a set of static and dynamic measurments, it's designing to the use case, whether that's setting the belly aft or shifting reefing points, and we invite you to tell us every little thing that's on your mind. We care so much we've crated a space for it.

How do we empower you to get the right set of numbers to start the perfect design?
